Planning a trip

What to ask a fishing guide

A useful booking conversation sets expectations on both sides.

Describe the people coming

Tell a prospective guide how many people will attend, their experience and any practical needs affecting the outing. Ask what equipment is supplied, where the group meets, how long the trip lasts and what happens if conditions change. Avoid assuming that a charter includes a particular species, transport, food or retained catch. Written details make it easier to compare arrangements without judging a service solely by a photograph of a large fish.

Understand the boundaries

Ask how weather decisions, cancellations and refunds are handled. Confirm which licenses or personal items each guest must obtain, and check requirements with the relevant authority. A responsible conversation should leave room for a trip to be shortened or cancelled. No guide can promise a particular catch. Keep the agreed itinerary and contact information available offline so that a poor signal does not complicate the meeting.

A short trip checklist

  • List experience and needs.
  • Confirm included equipment.
  • Read weather and cancellation terms.
