Weather & safety

Make the forecast part of the decision

Read current conditions before choosing a route or departure time.

Look beyond a weather symbol

Check an appropriate official forecast for the water and time of your outing. Wind, visibility, warnings and changes during the return matter alongside rain or sunshine. Local conditions can differ from those at home. Recheck before leaving and keep a way to receive updates that is suitable for the location. An old screenshot is not a live forecast.

Choose a conservative alternative

Define a shore-based or postponed option before arriving. In thunderstorm conditions, the National Weather Service stresses advance planning and avoiding exposure on the water. Do not treat a fishing appointment or a long drive as a reason to ignore warnings. A trip cancelled ashore can still lead to equipment practice or planning; a safe decision does not need a catch photograph to justify it.

A short trip checklist

  • Check a current official forecast.
  • Include the return period.
  • Prepare a postponed option.
