Choose a life jacket you will actually wear

Fit and suitability deserve attention before departure.

Check the specific equipment

Use the relevant boating authority’s requirements and the manufacturer’s instructions to select a suitable approved life jacket. Check fit, condition and any servicing needs for the actual person using it. A device stored somewhere aboard is not the same as one correctly worn. Different designs have different limitations, so do not infer suitability from appearance or comfort alone.

Make it part of the routine

Try the fit ashore, locate fastening points and ensure clothing does not undermine proper wear. Check children’s equipment separately rather than assuming an adult size can be adjusted enough. Replace or service equipment when required by its guidance. A predictable departure routine makes wearing the appropriate life jacket a normal part of boating instead of a hurried decision after conditions become uncomfortable.

A short trip checklist

  • Use approved suitable equipment.
  • Check individual fit.
  • Follow inspection and service guidance.
