Keep communication arrangements realistic

A phone is useful, but coverage and power are not guaranteed.

Check before relying on a device

Consider the communications appropriate to your water, vessel and local rules, using official boating guidance. Know whether a device works where you intend to travel and keep it protected according to its instructions. Store essential contacts offline. A full battery at departure does not prove reliable coverage throughout an outing, and a wet unprotected device may become unusable when needed most.

Agree on updates

Tell the person holding your trip plan when to expect an update and what to do if it does not arrive. Use established local emergency procedures instead of inventing your own signals. Brief the crew on where communication equipment is stored and who knows how to use it. Testing arrangements ashore helps reveal an assumption before it becomes a problem far from the launch.

A short trip checklist

  • Check appropriate equipment.
  • Save contacts offline.
  • Agree on missed-update procedures.
