Responsible angling

Prepare for catch and release

Handling decisions should be made before a fish is landed.

Organise the needed tools

Learn species-appropriate handling through the relevant fisheries authority and qualified instruction. Have suitable tools ready and decide who will assist. Keep photography secondary to prompt, careful handling. If the crew does not know how to deal with a particular situation, seek guidance rather than improvising for a picture. Equipment choice, hook use and retention rules belong in the preparation.

Reduce avoidable delay

Plan where tools are stored and how the area will remain clear. Avoid turning a landed fish into a prolonged demonstration while everyone searches for a camera. Follow current guidance for the species, conditions and any special circumstances. A responsible approach values a shorter record when that supports better handling. The most attractive photograph is not a reason to ignore conservation guidance or local regulations.

A short trip checklist
