Check the working end
Look over the portion of line that regularly contacts guides, rocks, tackle and knots. Fraying, flattening or obvious damage deserves attention before fishing resumes. Follow the line maker’s handling and replacement guidance. Check rod guides for visible damage that could affect the line, and avoid pulling a suspect section through your hands under tension. Inspection is easier in good light than during a hurried change on the water.
Keep replacement organised
Carry an appropriate spare and a way to contain trimmed pieces. Label storage so that different materials and strengths are not confused. If a knot repeatedly fails, pause to review how it is tied and whether the components are suitable. More force is not a substitute for understanding the problem. Dispose of unwanted line responsibly rather than leaving it near wildlife, paths or the shoreline.
A short trip checklist
