Tackle & technique

Organise a tackle box by use

A clear layout helps you find equipment without handling every hook.

A quiet freshwater lake and small fishing boat at dawn.

Group the next decisions

Arrange tackle according to the tasks you perform: casting options, spare terminal pieces and tools. Use compartments that suit the items and do not force hooks together. Separate damaged equipment for later repair or disposal instead of returning it to the active selection. Labels can be more helpful than memorising a complicated arrangement, especially when someone else occasionally uses the box.

Maintain the layout

After a session, inspect wet items and follow their care instructions before long-term storage. Keep sharp equipment out of children’s reach and protect it during travel. A good system remains useful when tired or in poor light. If a box is repeatedly too full to close cleanly, remove duplicates rather than accepting a routine of dropped tackle. Organisation should reduce handling, not become another collection project.

A short trip checklist

  • Group by fishing task.
  • Separate damaged items.
  • Protect sharp equipment.
