Boating & preparation

Build a departure checklist

A short routine helps prevent familiar omissions.

Check before the rush

Create a checklist suitable to your actual boat, equipment and local requirements. Include the maker’s operating checks, required safety equipment, available fuel or power, communications and the planned return. Inspect items rather than merely remembering that they were once packed. Complete the routine before the ramp becomes busy, so the last minutes of departure are not spent improvising.

Share the essentials

Let the crew know where essential equipment is stored and what to do if the outing changes. Leave a float plan with a responsible person using the relevant boating authority’s guidance. Agree on a return arrangement and how that person will be updated. A checklist is not a replacement for training or current requirements, but it can make the preparation you already understand more consistent.

A short trip checklist

  • Use the boat’s guidance.
  • Locate essential equipment.
  • Share a return plan.
